The Results Are in — 38% of TGX+ Folks Identify as Nonbinary

Last week, the 2022 US Trans Survey (USTS) Early Insights Report was released, and the findings are incredible.

The 2022 USTS is now the largest survey ever conducted to examine the experiences of binary and nonbinary transgender people in the United States, with an unprecedented 92,329 respondents (over a 300% increase from their 2015 study).

While this number alone highlights the significant growth we’re seeing in the greater TGX+ (transgender and gender expansive) community, the report also shows an increase in the amount of TGX+ folks who identify as nonbinary.

38% of TGX+ folks surveyed identified as nonbinary (a 3% increase from the 2015 study).

Additionally, 5% of all respondents identified as intersex, with another 23% reporting that they did not know whether they were intersex.

As we consider the landscape for diversity in sex and gender, these numbers show a significant turning point in our understanding of non-traditional sex and gender categories.

This will continue to have a significant impact on organizations, with both their employees and the communities they serve.

As more individuals come out as TGX+, organizations must make room to ensure folks across the spectrums of sex and gender are considered in recruitment, onboarding, healthcare accommodations, company culture, employee satisfaction, and more.

One of the key findings of the 2022 study shows that 94% of those who transitioned reported higher levels of life satisfaction after transitioning.

Of those who received hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries, this number went up to 98%.

Organizations have a crucial role to play for their TGX+ employees. By giving TGX+ individuals the opportunity to live authentically at work, they contribute to the overall joy, success, and life satisfaction of folks across the gender spectrum.
