What Does It Mean to Bring Your Whole Self to Work?
I’m freshly back from a week off of work. For the last few years, I’ve made a tradition of taking the first week off of July, after the busy buzz that comes with Pride Month. I spent the week taking extra walks with my dog at the park, surfing with friends, and reorganizing my closet (thanks for the inspo, Marie Kondo!).
So why am I telling you this?
When discussing TGX+ inclusion, we often talk about authenticity and bringing your whole self to work. But what does bringing your whole self to work even mean?
I was inspired by this conversation between Leaderology and Netflix’s Director of Talent and HR Business Partner, Neena Dass. Neena is a phenomenal example of a leader who brings her full self to work as she openly shares her passions as a DJ and salsa dancer.
Neena says, “When they get to see you outside of work, they get to know the real you, which is what actually builds trust. When you do that, you can have meaningful conversations and really be authentic.”
What authenticity truly means is a big question. What it is and what it’s not, what it means in the context of the workplace, and how to cultivate opportunities for greater authenticity for TGX+ folks and for the authentic journey of learning that comes with those who aren’t.
If you’re struggling with authenticity in your workplace and have questions, bring them to our monthly TGX+ Inclusion Roundtable. You can RSVP for the event here. And please share it with your colleagues and other folks in your network who could benefit.
